Bird Surveys
Protected Species Surveys > Bird Surveys
Background
All birds are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 which protects nests, eggs, and unfledged young from destruction, disturbance or damage caused by new development or renovation.
If you’re applying for planning permission to develop or carry out building work that requires removing some vegetation, like a hedge or some trees where there could be nesting birds, active nests or dependent young, your local authority will request a bird survey.
Survey Methods
The type of survey you require will depend on the type of development. We can advise you on what type of survey you require and the best time and schedule to carry out the work.
Nesting Bird Survey
Although a few species such as Barn Owls may nest at other times, the bird breeding season is typically between March and the end of August. It is recommended that site clearance works should be conducted outside of this period. Should works that may impact upon breeding birds be unavoidable during this period, then a nesting bird survey will be required before works commence.
Should any active nests be observed during the survey, they must be protected until the young have flown. This usually requires the area to be cordoned off and not disturbed until the birds have fledged.
Breeding Bird survey
A survey for breeding birds would normally require multiple visits between April and June/July. Timing may sometimes vary depending on the ecology of the species concerned and the objective of the survey.

Wintering bird surveys are most often required for habitats that support populations of migratory species during the winter, although they are also carried out in other areas when a full assessment of the impact upon birds is required.
A wintering bird survey can be undertaken between November to February and involves several site visits and the results of the survey can determine appropriate mitigation.
Report
Following the survey we will provide a detailed report showing our findings and any required mitigation. If required we can develop a suitable mitigation plan for you.
